The American Revolution Institute

ABOUT

The American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati, Inc. is the educational division of the Society, which is a registered IRS 501(c)(3) charity. The Institute was created in 2012 to allow the Society to expand its public educational outreach and encourage an increased popular appreciation for the timeless achievement of the American Revolution and why it remains relevant today.

The Institute is housed in the Society’s headquarters known as Anderson House in the heart of the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC. Built in 1905, this National Historic Landmark is open to the public for visitation.

HISTORY

The Society of the Cincinnati is America’s oldest patriotic and military officer organization, founded in 1783 by officers of the Continental Army and Navy and their French counterparts. Its mission is to promote knowledge and appreciation for the achievement of American independence, as it secured America’s independence while establishing our national ideals of liberty, freedom, equality and justice.

The Institute’s growing educational work enriches understanding of our War for Independence and the principles of the men and women who risked so much to launch our nation. In addition to exhibitions, the Institute supports advanced scholarship, conducts public education programs and lectures, collects historic objects, documents, and manuscripts and makes resources available to teachers, students, scholars, and lifelong learners.

GRANT PROJECT

The Americana Corner Preserving America grant awarded to the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati, Inc. helped support a temporary museum exhibit entitled Saving Soldiers: Medical Practice in the Revolutionary War. Drawing from the Institute’s extensive library and museum collections, the show illuminated stories about the practices and challenges in military medicine at the dawn of our nation. Following a thirty-year tradition of presenting special museum shows at Anderson House related to its mission, this display on medical practices during the American Revolution was its 51st special exhibit.

One of the world’s leading document collections on the American Revolution and the art of war, the Institute’s research library contains more than 50,000 items and is replete with first-hand material on the medical practices during the Revolution. This exhibition was augmented by various public programs and lectures held at Anderson House and the show’s catalog, image galleries and videos remain accessible online.

Americana Corner is proud to assist the American Revolution Institute with its mission to preserve the Great American Story and to help our fellow citizens grow their love of country.
