Fort Osage
Preserving an Era of Adventure in the Missouri River Valley
DETAILS
Project: Fort Osage Living History Expansion
Term: Five Years
Commitment: $125,000*
DESCRIPTION
At Fort Osage National Historic Landmark, visitors step back in time and experience the lives of the men and women who secured the American Frontier. Built in 1808, under the direction of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Fort Osage served as both a military garrison and a trade center. Today, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the reconstructed historic site that overlooks the Missouri River as they learn from authentically-attired historical interpreters about the daily life of military, civilian, and Native American populations at Fort Osage.
This project aims to expand the living history programs at Fort Osage to include interpretive clothing and equipment, reproductions, educational programming, and interpretive signage, enhancing the visitor experience, boosting volunteer participation and creatingmore educational programming. The first year of this five-year project will focus on the launch of the officer’s quarters; subsequent years will include the launch of a history lab, building a youth volunteer program, and introducing family days and homeschool programming into the fort’s educational offerings.
